Five Lights

This is Theodore Dalrymple, author of Our Culture, What’s Left of It… I thought I had blogged this before, but I guess not.

Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all  their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

Now, check out the illustrations, by Billy Beck.

The title of this post is a reference to an episode of Star Trek:TNG where Picard is captured, starved and tortured. All he has to do to be granted a life of "respect" and "luxury" from his captors, in study and inquiry of the arts, sciences, and philosophy, is to affirm that he sees Five Lights. But there were only Four Lights.

Nah, I think PCness developed as a response to people who have no tact or diplomatic skills. Like William Bennett, for example. He's not wrong, he just has no tact whatsoever, and in a professional environment, you just don't say things like that. If you are well-known, your professional environment is much wider than one of us common folk, especially if you are a policymaker or a talkshow host.

In a professional environment, I do not wear my t-shirts that say "Faux News Channel" or whatever. I respect the rules of professionalism (and I don't want to be fired.) People who haven't done the same with their mouths allowed a reactionary movement to develop and flourish to the point where no one can say anything anymore, and the hostility toward this movement is making it worse, not better. They should suffer the consequences of mouthing off accordingly, whether it be a battering by the press or getting fired.

    PC isn't for Communists only.

Anyone who dares question Condoliesalot Rice is immediately labeled either "RACIST!!!" or "SEXIST!!!" by the wingnut mouthpieces. And let us not forget the pretzel they twisted themselves into over Jeff Guckertonnon. It was fun to watch shrill gay bashers suddenly scream "HOMOPHOBE!!!" in an attempt to make people overlook how it was Jeffy came to be in his position.
